is a painter and printmaker who studied at Farnham School
of Art 1953-56, Bournemouth and Poole College 1976-80
and gained a Diploma in Fine Art (Painting) from Southampton
Institute in 1989.
For some years now my work has moved
away from painting and into printmaking, using several
disciplines – etching, relief, a simple lithographic
process, and monoprinting, sometimes combining these
in my quest to achieve ‘painterly’ prints.
Most of the monoprints are produced without the help
of a press but by using hand pressure or a Japanese
‘baren’, and applying several layers of
translucent colour over the image. This way I usually
work on a series of similar images but the end result
is unique and no two are the same.
The
inspiration for my work comes mainly from the life around
my rural Dorset surroundings, and also from travels
in India and the East and the people and colours encountered
there. It bears no message apart from a delight in their
observation and a wish to convey this.
